چکیده

Materials with visually important heterogeneous subsurface scattering, including marble, skin, leaves, and minerals, are common in the real world. However, general, accurate and efficient rendering of these materials is an open problem. In this short report, we describe the heterogeneous diffusion equation (DE) formulation that solves this problem. This formulation has two key results: an accurate model of the reduced intensity (RI) source, the diffusive source boundary condition (DSBC), and its associated render query function. Using there results, we can render subsurface scattering nearly as accurately as Monte Carlo (MC) algorithms. At the end of this report, we demonstrate this accuracy by comparing our new formulation to other methods used in previous work.

A computational approach to simulate subsurface light diffusion in arbitrarily shaped objects

To faithfully display objects consisting of translucent materials such as milk, fruit, wax and marble, one needs to take into account subsurface scattering of light. Accurate renderings require expensive simulation of light transport. Alternatively, the widely-used fast dipole approximation [15] cannot deal with internal visibility issues, and has limited applicability (only homogeneous materia...

Path Integration for Light Transport in Volumes

Simulating the transport of light in volumes such as clouds or objects with subsurface scattering is computationally expensive. We describe an approximation to such transport using path integration. Unlike the more commonly used diffusion approximation, the path integration approach does not explicitly rely on the assumption that the material within the volume is dense. Instead, it assumes the ...

A Compact Tucker-Based Factorization Model for Heterogeneous Subsurface Scattering

This paper presents a novel compact factored subsurface scattering representation for optically thick, heterogeneous translucent materials. Our subsurface scattering representation is a combination of Tucker-based factorization and a linear regression method. We first apply Tucker factorization on the intensity profiles of the heterogeneous subsurface scattering responses. Next, we fit a polyno...

Classical and Improved Diffusion Theory for Subsurface Scattering

This technical report provides a description and comparison of classical and improved diffusion theory as used for rendering subsurface scattering in computer graphics. We discuss the searchlight problem and describe the diffusion equation and Green’s functions of each diffusion theory. We discuss the commonly used single-depth approximation leading to the diffusion dipole and elaborate on its ...

Separating Subsurface Scattering from Photometric Images∗

While subsurface scattering is common in many real objects, almost all separation algorithms focus on extracting specular and diffuse components from real images. In this paper, we present a model-less approach derived from the bi-directional surface scattering reflectance distribution function (BSSRDF). In our approach, we show that an illumination image is composed by the Lambertian diffuse a...
